Twyford's Dianthus Garden Spice® Coral WINS Classic City Awards 2003
Formally the Georgia Garden Gold Award, the 2003 Classic City Award for best perennial goes to the Dianthus Garden Spice® Coral. As noted by industry icon, Allan Armitage, these plants demonstrated the very best performance from the hundreds of plants trialed in the Georgia Horticultural Gardens. "These plants work" noted Armitage when asked how the plant got the award.
Allan also noted that "if we had to choose but one dianthus this year, Garden Spice® Coral would be chosen as the best of the bunch. (The) plants were low-growing (10to 15 inches), and formed handsome mounds of blue-green narrow foliage. Plants were in full bloom for approximately eight weeks, covered in vibrantly colored, small, coral-red, carnation-type flowers. We had four different cultivars in the Garden Spice® series and all performed well."
