With arching sprays of elegant lacy foliage, nothing says “Tropical” like ferns. The boom in popularity for indoor foliage started with ferns, and their appeal remains strong to this day. From the classic ‘Boston’ types to the stunning new ‘Crocodyllus’, Twyford brings you the best from around the world. Produced from tissue culture clumps, our ferns offer outstanding consistency and uniformity from crop to crop.
Pot Sizes: 6, 8, 10, inches
Container Size and Finish Time: While flowering tropical plants may have taken some of the attention away from more traditional foliage plants, Microsorium crocodyllus from Twyford International is one fern that could hardly be called traditional. A native of Australia, M. crocodyllus is named for its foliage, which resembles the skin of a crocodile.
The unusual leaf texture and its plant habit allow this fern to be used for pot and basket production. Foliage can be harvested for cut greens in floral arrangements. It can also be used in combination planters for contrast as well as a specimen plant. Fronds can reach 5-6 feet long. Outdoors, plants are hardy to USDA Hardiness Zone 11.
Rooted 72-cell liners are available with one liner planted in a 6-inch pot finishing in four to five months; one liner in a 8-inch pot finishes in seven to eight months and one liner in a 10-inch pot or hanging best requires nine to 11 months to finish.
Potting Mix: Crocodyllus prefers a well-drained growing medium with a pH of 5.5-6 that promotes good aeration and drainage. The medium should be allowed to dry so that the roots aren’t constantly wet. Maintain an evenly moist medium and avoid overwatering at night.
Lighting Requirements: Crocodyllus grows best under light levels of 1,500-2,000 footcandles. Plants can be grown under higher light levels if they have been gradually acclimated to these conditions. Higher light levels promote a more upright growth habit with shorter, stiffer fronds.
Temperature Requirements: Plants grow best at 70-90 degrees F. Growth will be slowed significantly at temperatures below 60 degrees. Crocodyllus can tolerate temperatures as low as 45 degrees if it is protected from the wind.
Fertilizer Requirements: Crocodyllus does well with a constant liquid feed of 20-10-20 at 150 parts per million. Keep the electrical conductivity level at or below 1.5. A source of sulfur should be added occasionally. Irrigate the medium with clear water every fourth watering to prevent salt buildup. If liquid fertilizer is applied with overhead irrigation, the plants should be rinsed after each application to remove any residue.
Common Problems: Crocodyllus is susceptible to mites and snails.
Crop Scheduling Finishing plants from rooted 72-cell liners: one liner planted in a 6-inch pot finishes in four to five months; one liner in a 8-inch pot finishes in seven to eight months and one liner in a 10-inch pot or hanging best finishes in nine to 11 months to finish.
Pinching Few insect and disease problems. Has multiple uses as indoor and outdoor foliage plant grown separately or in combination and as a hanging basket.
Unusual leathery looking leaf gives this plant a unique appearance whether it’s finished in a container by itself or in combinations or used in fresh cut floral arrangements.
